Brazil social assistance programs require updated registration for 2026

In 2026, Brazilian social assistance programs, including Bolsa Família and the Benefício de Prestação Continuada (BPC), require strict adherence to registration and income criteria to prevent benefit suspension or cancellation.

For Bolsa Família, which serves approximately 19 million families, the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance is conducting a 2026 CadÚnico qualification review. Single-person households face stricter rules, often requiring in-home interviews for updates. Failure to comply with health and education requirements or registration deadlines can lead to benefit blocking.

The BPC, which provides a minimum wage to elderly citizens over 65 and people with disabilities, is also subject to rigorous oversight. Eligibility depends on a per capita family income of 1/4 of the minimum wage. To avoid suspension, beneficiaries must keep their CadÚnico data updated every two years. Notably, certain family members, such as divorced or separated children living at the same address, may not be included in the income calculation depending on legal definitions of the family group. Unlike traditional pensions, BPC is non-contributory, meaning recipients do not need prior social security contributions to qualify.
