Brazil social burnout drives surge in last‑minute cancellations

Researchers describe a growing tendency among many people to cancel social plans at the last minute, calling it “social burnout.” The behavior is linked to emotional, psychological and behavioural factors that have intensified in recent years, especially among those with demanding schedules, high stress or anxiety. The COVID‑19 pandemic, which forced prolonged isolation, appears to have entrenched more solitary routines, making it harder for some to resume frequent in‑person interactions.

Experts say the brain constantly weighs the energy cost of activities; when individuals are physically or emotionally fatigued, staying home can seem the most comfortable choice. Frequent cancellations are not necessarily a sign of mental illness, but may signal a need for greater emotional rest and recovery.
