Brazil Social Security: Ministers and Economists Warn Against Benefit Cuts

Social Security Minister Wolney Queiroz has advocated for maintaining the link between retirement benefits and the minimum wage adjustment. Speaking at the 47th Brazilian Congress of Private Pension, Queiroz argued that decoupling these values could lead to increased poverty and worsened social indicators, citing adverse effects observed in Chile and Argentina.

Concurrently, a study by the Center for Research in Macroeconomics of Inequalities (Made) at the University of São Paulo (FEA-USP) warns that proposed budget cuts could devastate the economies of approximately 4,000 small municipalities in Brazil. The research indicates that in these interior regions, social programs and pensions represent a significantly higher portion of the economy compared to metropolitan centers.

Economists note that benefits such as Bolsa Família, the BPC, and social security pensions account for nearly half of the income for the poorest families. Because these funds are primarily used for essential goods, they sustain local commerce and municipal tax revenue in rural areas.
