Brazil solar energy expansion drives growth and grid management challenges

Brazil is experiencing a significant expansion in solar energy, driven by both residential interest and large-scale distributed generation. In the real estate sector, condominiums are increasingly adopting solar technology to improve financial predictability and reduce recurring expenses in common areas.

As of July 2026, Brazil's installed solar capacity reached 74.3 GW, with over 4.7 million distributed generation systems and R$ 328.2 billion in total investments. However, this rapid growth has created operational challenges for the national power grid.

The Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS) has recently had to implement mechanisms to curb excess energy supply. In a recent instance, distributors were required to cut approximately 1 GW of generation to maintain the balance between supply and demand, a necessity caused by the intermittent nature of solar and wind power during periods of low consumption.
