Brazil states Paraíba and Paraná expand renewable energy capacity
The Brazilian states of Paraíba and Paraná are advancing energy security through renewable sources.
Paraíba has achieved energy self-sufficiency, becoming a net exporter of electricity. According to the 2025 Paraíba Energy Balance, the state generated 8,134.65 GWh of electricity against a final consumption of 6,733.20 GWh, resulting in a surplus of 1,401.45 GWh. This growth is driven by wind and solar power. Wind energy currently accounts for 48.15% of the state's 2,573.02 MW installed capacity, with several new wind farms under construction to further increase capacity.
In Paraná, the state government is focusing on rural energy security through programs like Renova Paraná and Trifásico - Se Liga Aí, Paraná!. Over 45,000 rural properties have implemented their own generation systems, primarily using solar and biogas. These initiatives have provided R$ 310 million in interest rate subsidies to over 10,000 producers. The installed capacity from these private systems has reached 1.2 GW, providing an estimated annual savings of R$ 1.47 billion for beneficiary families.
