Brazil STF: Justice Fachin assumes control of fake news inquiry

Supreme Federal Court (STF) Justice Edson Fachin has assumed control of the 'fake news inquiry,' a move that significantly reduces the influence and jurisdiction of Justice Alexandre de Moraes. By revoking a 2019 decision, Fachin has taken over the lead role in the investigation and at least 38 related processes, including 32 petitions and seven inquiries. These transferred cases include investigations involving Jair Bolsonaro regarding electronic voting machines.

In a separate development regarding the judiciary, Federal Police delegates reportedly expressed fears of retaliation to Justice André Mendonça. The delegates allegedly felt pressured and feared becoming targets of the fake news inquiry if they produced reports concerning Alexandre de Moraes. Mendonça has requested that Fachin hear the delegates to clarify the circumstances surrounding these reports and any potential constraints faced during the investigation.
