Brazil stock market sees massive foreign investor outflow in August
Foreign investors withdrew significant capital from the Brazilian stock market in August 2026, reversing a positive trend seen earlier in the year. Reports indicate an outflow of approximately 18.1 billion reais (US$3.5 billion) from B3, Brazil’s main stock exchange. Some analyses, such as one from JPMorgan, placed the outflow as high as 22 billion reais (US$4.2 billion), marking one of the largest withdrawals since 2008.
This retreat follows a period of growth in the first four months of the year, when foreign investors added roughly 56.55 billion reais to the secondary market. However, since May, capital has been steadily exiting. The August outflow has reduced the total positive balance accumulated throughout the year to approximately 18.29 billion reais.
Despite the net outflow, the total volume of financial transactions by foreign investors actually increased in August, rising to 739.46 billion reais from 619.13 billion reais in July. This increase was driven by a 22.9% rise in sales, which outpaced a 16% rise in purchases. The Ibovespa index experienced volatility during the month, dipping slightly before rallying in the final two weeks of August.
