Brazil street running events grow 85% amid cardiac health warnings
The number of street running events in Brazil has surged by 85% compared to 2024, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Street Race and Outdoor Sports Organizers (Abraceo). This rapid growth follows a 24% increase previously recorded in 2024.
Medical professionals are warning of increased cardiac risks, particularly for participants who lack adequate physical preparation or have undiagnosed cardiovascular issues. Cristiano Faria Pisani, president of the Brazilian Society of Cardiac Arrhythmias (Sobrac), noted that intense physical exertion can overload the heart, potentially triggering severe arrhythmias or cardiac arrest.
Experts recommend pre-participation screening, including cardiovascular history, physical exams, and resting electrocardiograms, as suggested by the American Heart Association. Doctors also advise amateur athletes to manage risk factors such as hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes, and to avoid testing new hydration or nutritional strategies on race day.
