Brazil strengthens meningitis prevention and medical response
Public health initiatives in Brazil are focusing on the prevention and management of meningitis. In the Distrito Federal, the Unified Health System (SUS) is providing vaccines against major germs, including meningococcal types ACWY and C, through more than 170 health centers.
In Macaé, health professionals at the Barra Urgent Care Unit (UPA) recently underwent specialized training to improve the diagnosis and management of the disease. The training, organized by the Epidemiological Surveillance Coordination, aims to ensure rapid response to prevent deaths and severe sequelae. Local medical data shows varying case numbers in Macaé, with 30 cases recorded in 2019 and 26 in 2023.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Common symptoms include high fever, intense headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, and confusion. Health authorities emphasize that bacterial meningitis can progress rapidly and requires immediate medical attention.
