Brazil study finds hypertension in 28.3% of children and adolescents

A study conducted by the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (SBC), titled ‘Brasil Coração Saudável’, has revealed that 28.3% of children and adolescents surveyed in Brazil exhibit hypertension. An additional 11.6% were classified as pre-hypertensive.

The research involved 6,092 participants from 38 schools across the states of Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, and São Paulo between June and October 2026. The findings highlighted a significant correlation between weight and blood pressure: among participants with obesity, 48.4% presented hypertension, a figure that rose to 60.5% among obese adolescents aged 15 to 18.

Regarding weight, approximately one-third of the participants were overweight (19.5%) or obese (13.6%). The study also identified lifestyle factors contributing to these trends, noting that 59% of participants spend more than three hours per day on screens outside of school, and 66% engage in only one to two hours of physical activity per week.
