Brazil study: Domestic violence against women rises on football match days

The second edition of the study ‘Futebol e violência contra a mulher’, released by the Fórum Brasileiro de Segurança Pública (FBSP), reveals a significant correlation between professional football match days and increased domestic violence against women in Brazil.

Analyzing data from 2023 to 2025 across five major capitals—São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, and Porto Alegre—the research found that reports of bodily injury from domestic violence rose by approximately 28.9% on match days. Additionally, threats against women increased by 27.4% during these periods.

The impact is most severe among young women aged 15 to 29, who experienced a 44.4% increase in both threats and bodily injuries on match days. The study also noted that violence often occurs within the home, with domestic bodily injury rising by 35.1% and threats by 26.8% on match days.

Researchers emphasize that while football is not the direct cause, the sporting calendar acts as a temporal risk marker. Experts suggest that security forces should reinforce specialized units, such as Women's Police Stations, and urge football clubs to act as social agents to help decouple sports passion from domestic aggression.
