Brazil study reveals adoption bias against older, dark pets as new app aims to boost shelter adoptions

A new research report on animal shelters in Brazil found that age, dark coat colour and health problems significantly limit adoption chances. Puppies are adopted 81% of the time and small‑breed dogs 92%, while 86% of shelters cite age as the main barrier and 69% note bias against black or dark‑coated animals. Seventy‑five percent of NGOs report difficulties adopting animals with disabilities or chronic conditions, and 75% of cats with FIV/FELV face rejection. The study also highlights a surge in post‑adoption returns within the first three months, stressing the need for better owner education and post‑adoption support.

In the Federal District, the Green Party (PV) launched the free AdotaPet app to connect independent protectors, shelters and prospective adopters. Users can browse available dogs and cats, match with pets, and arrange adoptions. The first couple in the capital adopted a kitten through the platform, and organizers plan to roll the app out nationwide via state ambassadors. The initiative aims to increase visibility for rescued animals and promote responsible adoption practices.
