Brazil supports ILO platform‑work convention, granting gig drivers minimum‑wage benefits

The 114th International Labour Conference of the ILO convened in Geneva from 1‑12 June, bringing together more than 5,000 delegates from 187 countries. Delegates adopted Convention No. 193 on decent work in the platform economy, establishing standards for algorithmic transparency, social protection, health and safety and a minimum‑wage floor for platform workers.

Brazil’s Confederation of Commerce (CNC) participated actively in the conference, meeting with Labour Minister Luiz Marinho and contributing technical positions on digital‑platform regulation. The CNC highlighted the significance of the new norm, stating that the presence in Geneva “reinforces the commitment of the CNC to follow international agendas and defend solutions that promote balance in labour relations, legal certainty and a modern, competitive business environment.”

The convention is expected to benefit roughly two million Brazilian platform workers – including ride‑share drivers – by providing a benefit equivalent to one minimum wage, health coverage and greater procedural rights regarding algorithmic decisions. Brazil was not listed for further clarification by the ILO’s applying commission, indicating compliance with existing labour commitments.
