Brazil Supreme Court authorizes probe into R$ 80 million in parliamentary amendments

Supreme Court Minister Flávio Dino has authorized the sharing of documents to investigate the allocation of approximately R$ 80 million in parliamentary amendments to Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro. The investigation, requested by the Prosecutor General’s Office, targets União Brasil national president Antônio Rueda and state deputy Márcio Canella for suspected abuse of political and economic power.

The funds, designated between 2025 and 2026, were recorded under the generic heading “Liderança do União Brasil” without identifying specific responsible parliamentarians. Prosecutors are seeking to cross-reference these records with documents from two ongoing operations: “Transparência,” overseen by Dino, and “Unha e Carne,” overseen by Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

Investigators are looking into whether Rueda and Canella, who were not holding mandates at the time of the allocations, orchestrated the distribution of these resources. Additionally, Federal Police reportedly found an annotation on Canella’s phone referencing “Emendas / 20 Pedro 20 Mota,” which may link to specific deputies, though no direct involvement has been proven. Both Rueda and Canella have denied any wrongdoing.
