Brazil Supreme Court faces crisis amid fraud allegations

Brazil’s Supreme Court is facing an unprecedented crisis characterized by canceled sessions and justices overruling one another. The conflict centers on a confrontation between Justice Alexandre de Moraes and Justice André Mendonça, an appointee of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The turmoil stems from a massive financial fraud investigation involving the collapse of Banco Master, a bank with assets worth up to $16 billion. Justice Mendonça released a police report containing messages from former bank head Daniel Vorcaro, which appeared to show Vorcaro seeking assistance to halt the investigation. Allegations have surfaced regarding Justice Moraes, including claims that he provided legal advice to Vorcaro and that his wife held a 130 million reais ($23 million) contract with Banco Master.

This judicial instability occurs less than three weeks before the October presidential election, where incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to face Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. The court is scheduled to hold a televised plenary session to address whether a justice should be investigated for corruption.
