Alexandre de Moraes grants semi-open regime to January 8 convict
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has granted Débora Rodrigues dos Santos, known as ‘Débora do Batom’, progression to a semi-open prison regime. Rodrigues dos Santos was sentenced to 14 years for her role in the January 8, 2023, attacks in Brasília, where she gained notoriety for writing ‘Perdeu, mané’ on a statue in front of the STF headquarters.
The decision includes a 212-day reduction in her sentence due to remissions earned through work, reading, and passing the Enem PPL exam. While the change to a semi-open regime allows her to leave the house during the day for work or study, Moraes has maintained her under house arrest because she has minor children.
These judicial moves come amid political tension. Senator Magno Malta stated that the impeachment of Justice Moraes remains a priority for the right in 2027. Additionally, the Novo party has signaled its intent to join a Senate bloc demanding the impeachment of STF ministers to address perceived judicial abuses.
