Supreme Federal Court to judge investigation into Alexandre de Moraes

The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) is holding an extraordinary session to decide whether to open a formal investigation into Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The decision follows a Federal Police report detailing 187 interactions and 52 messages exchanged between Moraes and Daniel Vorcaro, the former controller of Banco Master.

The messages, recovered from Vorcaro’s phone, suggest a close relationship. They include discussions regarding a R$ 131 million contract between Banco Master and the law firm of Viviane Barci de Moraes, the minister’s wife. Additionally, the report indicates Vorcaro sought information from Moraes regarding potential police operations intended to arrest him.

The session, presided over by Minister Edson Fachin, will first determine the validity of the Federal Police report. The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) has argued for the report's annulment, claiming that Minister André Mendonça initiated investigations into Moraes illegally without prior plenary authorization.

In preparation for the session, Minister Mendonça lifted the secrecy on legal processes involving Vorcaro’s payment network, following instructions from Fachin and support from the PGR. This action has unsealed 54 lines of investigation related to Operation Compliance Zero, which targets corruption and financial fraud.
