Brazil Supreme Court Minister Nunes Marques Suspends Irrigation Funding Lawsuit and Dismisses US‑Interference Claim

Supreme Court Minister Kassio Nunes Marques extended the suspension of a civil action filed by the Federal District and the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul seeking R$ 5.2 billion from the Union for unmet irrigation funding obligations. The suspension, now lasting an additional 120 days, aims to allow further negotiations between the states and the federal government over the required 20 % share of irrigation resources stipulated in the Constitutional Transitional Act.

In a separate ruling, Minister Nunes Marques rejected an action brought by the Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy, which alleged unconstitutional US interference in Brazil’s affairs. He ruled the group lacked standing to file an Arguição de Descumprimento de Preceito Fundamental and that the petition did not meet the requirements for such a constitutional claim, directing the matter to the executive and international law mechanisms.
