Brazil Supreme Court ministers spark debate over journalism degree requirement

A debate regarding the mandatory requirement of a journalism degree to practice the profession in Brazil has resurfaced following comments from Supreme Federal Court (STF) ministers Flávio Dino and Alexandre de Moraes. The ministers have suggested a reconsideration of the 2009 ruling, which struck down the requirement, determining that mandatory degrees were incompatible with constitutional guarantees of freedom of expression and information.

Journalism professionals have expressed concern over the proposal. Journalist Anderson Scardoelli warned that such a measure could potentially serve as a mechanism to control communication, noting a perception among some that the initiative might target media outlets and professionals critical of the Court. While the ministers have called for a discussion, the 2009 decision remains the current legal standard, and the requirement for a specific degree is not currently in effect.
