Brazil Supreme Court rejects pension ‘full‑life’ review, cuts extra payments

The Brazilian Supreme Court (STF) voted 7‑3 to end the long‑standing “revisão da vida toda” pension review, which would have let retirees factor salaries earned before July 1994 into their benefit calculations. The court declared the case final, citing an estimated fiscal impact of up to R$480 billion if the measure were applied broadly. Retirees who received revised benefits before April 2024 are protected and will not have to repay the amounts.

In a separate ruling on ADI 6309, the STF removed the minimum‑age requirement for the special retirement benefit, restoring the original purpose of the scheme to protect workers exposed to hazardous conditions. The decision aligns the rule with constitutional objectives and addresses concerns about the financial sustainability of Brazil’s pension system.
