Brazil Supreme Court suspends sessions amid internal political crisis

Brazil’s Supreme Court has canceled two consecutive days of deliberations amid a deepening institutional and political crisis. Chief Justice Luiz Edson Fachin ordered the suspension of sessions, scheduling the court to reconvene on Tuesday to address internal turmoil involving allegations of corruption, political bias, and police interference.

The crisis stems from the unsealing of federal police documents by Justice André Mendonça, a Bolsonaro appointee. The documents allegedly show Daniel Vorcaro, a disgraced banker associated with the failed Banco Master, seeking legal advice from Justice Alexandre de Moraes via text messages.

In response, Justice de Moraes has accused Mendonça of abusing his authority for political purposes, specifically regarding the manner in which Vorcaro was interviewed. The conflict has drawn reactions from across the political spectrum, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. On Tuesday, ten justices are expected to deliberate on whether to investigate de Moraes regarding the alleged links to Vorcaro.
