Brazil Supreme Court tackles femicide panel and indigenous land cases

On 6 August, Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF) inaugurated the permanent "Sete Marias" panel in its Hall of Busts. Created by artist Antonio Veronese, the artwork protests the country's high femicide rates and portrays resilient women. The ceremony was attended by ministers Edson Fachin, Gilmar Mendes, Cármen Lúcia, Kassio Nunes Marques, Marco Aurélio and others. Cármen Lúcia noted that "a woman is killed every four hours" in Brazil, underscoring the urgency of the issue.

The following day, 7 August, the STF will hear three pivotal cases concerning the demarcation of indigenous lands, environmental licensing and mining activities. The court has already ruled the "temporal mark" doctrine unconstitutional, affirming indigenous rights as fundamental. These decisions are framed as essential for justice, environmental protection and the future of the nation.
