Banco Master investigation triggers crisis in Brazil's Supreme Court

The Banco Master investigation has triggered a major institutional crisis within Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF). Following a request by STF President Edson Fachin, Minister André Mendonça lifted the secrecy on 15 procedures related to the case, exposing evidence of corruption and financial fraud involving former banker Daniel Vorcaro.

Federal Police reports indicate that Vorcaro allegedly financed international travel and meals for Central Bank employees to secure favorable treatment for Banco Master. Additionally, investigations have revealed a R$ 108 million contract between Banco Master and the law firm owned by the wife of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, which reportedly included monthly payments of R$ 3 million for legal and compliance services.

The revelations have led to intense political pressure, including a proposal by the OAB-DF to initiate impeachment proceedings against Ministers Alexandre de Moraes and Dias Toffoli. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called for a total lifting of secrecy, describing the situation as the 'largest financial crime in Brazil's history.' The STF has scheduled an extraordinary plenary session for September 15 to address the ongoing crisis.
