Brazil surpasses US as world's largest beef producer

Brazil has emerged as the world's largest beef producer, surpassing the United States with annual exports of 3.5 million tonnes. While Brazil has historically consumed 70 per cent of its production domestically, that figure has dropped to 61 per cent as export prices become more lucrative.

Analysts suggest that Brazil's competitive advantage lies in its scale and low price point, making it attractive to major commodity consumers like China and the United States. Brazil currently sends 46 per cent of its exports to China, though safeguard quotas may lead to increased competition in Australian markets.

In response to the rise of Brazilian commodity beef, market analysts suggest Australia should focus on the premium market. Experts note that Australia can maintain its position by emphasizing superior product quality, greater traceability, and avoiding the reputation issues related to disease outbreaks and governance that have previously affected the Brazilian supply chain.
