Brazil survey: 82% of adults oppose smartphone use for children under 3

A survey by the Locomotiva Institute reveals that 82% of Brazilian adults oppose smartphone use for children up to three years old. Resistance remains high for the four-to-seven age group, with 75% opposition. However, acceptance increases with age: 52% of adults approve of children having their own device by age 12, and 88% support smartphone use for adolescents aged 13 to 17.

The study, which interviewed 1,367 adults, also highlights concerns regarding lifestyle changes. Approximately 83% of respondents believe children today prefer screens over playing outdoors, though 73% maintain that outdoor play is superior for child development.

These findings align with federal guidelines and the Digital Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA Digital), which emphasize parental supervision and restrict social media access for those under 16 to accounts linked to a legal guardian. Recent IBGE data also indicates a decline in the percentage of children aged 10 to 13 who own their own devices.
