Brazil advances SUS modernization through technology and funding

Brazil's Ministry of Health and various stakeholders are advancing strategies to modernize the Unified Health System (SUS) through digital transformation, technological sovereignty, and institutional partnerships. At the 34th National Congress of Santas Casas and Philanthropic Hospitals, Minister Alexandre Padilha announced a projected increase of R$ 450 million in funding for these institutions in the 2027 budget, noting they perform 60% of SUS services.

Efforts to strengthen the system include the planning of the 7th triennium of Proadi-SUS, a partnership between the Ministry and major hospitals like Sírio-Libanês and Einstein to foster research and specialized care. Additionally, discussions at the MEDTROP 2026 forum emphasized using digital health, such as telehealth and interoperability, to improve access in remote regions like the Amazon.

National leaders are also focusing on sanitary sovereignty. During the 5th Health Forum, officials discussed reducing dependence on foreign medical supplies by boosting domestic pharmaceutical production and investing in technologies like RNA vaccine platforms. On a local level, municipalities like Mucuri are implementing new protocols to streamline access to specialized exams and consultations via the SUS network.
