Brazil TCU Minister warns of potential pension fund collapse
Augusto Nardes, a minister at Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), has issued a warning that the country may lack sufficient funds to pay retirees and pensioners in the future. In a video released on social media, Nardes stated that the current fiscal situation is “collapsing the national economy” and making it difficult to attract international investors.
Nardes highlighted a Social Security deficit exceeding R$ 404 billion. He also criticized what he termed “off-budget spending” (desorçamentação), claiming that expenditures not accounted for in the official budget have already reached R$ 326 billion.
The minister drew parallels between the current administration's fiscal management and the “fiscal pedaling” maneuvers used during Dilma Rousseff’s presidency, which led to her impeachment. Nardes, who was the rapporteur for the fiscal pedaling case in 2015, suggested that similar accounting manipulations are occurring again as the public debt has risen from 72% to 83% of GDP.
