Brazil teen births twins with different fathers in rare case

A 19‑year‑old woman in the state of Goiás, Brazil, gave birth to twins whose DNA tests showed they have different biological fathers. The twins were conceived within hours of each other after the mother had sexual relations with two men on the same day. Medical specialist Túlio Jorge Franco explained that the phenomenon, known as heteroparental superfecundation, occurs when two eggs released in one cycle are fertilised by sperm from different men. The case is estimated to be only the twentieth documented instance worldwide. After DNA testing at eight months of age revealed the discrepancy, the first man chose to legally recognize both children and is raising them together with the mother.

The incident highlights the extreme rarity of such twin births and underscores the role of genetic testing in uncovering unexpected paternity situations.
