Brazil implements AI and new radar technologies for road safety
Brazil is implementing several new technologies to enhance road safety and vehicle security. In the realm of surveillance, the SAVE (Vehicle Authentication System) has been developed by FITec Labs in partnership with K9 Segurança. This AI-driven system uses cameras, mobile devices, and geolocation to identify stolen or cloned vehicles in real time, potentially involving delivery workers as mobile data collectors.
Traffic enforcement is also evolving with the testing of average speed radars across eight Brazilian states, including Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. Authorized by the ANTT, these systems use two monitoring points to calculate a vehicle's average speed over a stretch, preventing drivers from simply slowing down only when passing a fixed camera. Additionally, AI-equipped cameras are being deployed in Espírito Santo to detect internal infractions such as mobile phone use and failure to wear seatbelts.
Legislative and regulatory updates are also underway. A new bill (PL 2975/2026) proposes mandatory countdown timers on traffic lights equipped with electronic monitoring to improve driver predictability. Furthermore, the use of 'drogômetros' (saliva-based drug detection devices) has been regulated by Contran, though implementation in states like Mato Grosso do Sul is expected to take until 2027.
