Brazil Tightens Trailer and Vehicle Load Regulations
Brazilian traffic law now treats passenger cars pulling a trailer (carretinha) as heavy vehicles. The trailer must be registered with the local Detran, display a license plate, and be equipped with safety items such as rear bumper, rear wheel protectors, red rear position lights, brake lights, rear plate illumination, amber or red turn signals, adequate tires, and, when required, side and delimiting lights. While attached, the car loses its light‑vehicle status, must obey the speed limits for heavy vehicles, and violations incur a fine of R$ 195.23 and five points on the driver’s licence.
The same legal framework also penalises excess weight in pickups, vans, and other utility vehicles. Under the Código de Trânsito Brasileiro, any vehicle exceeding its manufacturer‑specified load capacity can be fined, detained, and required to off‑load cargo before continuing. The penalty applies to overloaded cargo bays, passenger‑plus‑baggage loads, and improperly distributed weight, with enforcement carried out by traffic authorities.
