Brazil tire imports rise 58% as domestic market share falls
Tire imports to Brazil grew by 58.3% between January and August, according to data from Anip and Comex Stat. This surge has led imported products to capture 70% of the replacement market, a significant shift from 2019 when they held only 34%.
In the cargo tire segment, imports rose by 116.2%, while domestic sales for the replacement market fell by 9.8%, leaving imports with a 72% market share. For passenger and light commercial tires, imports increased by 47.8% to 27 million units, accounting for 69% of the market.
China is the primary supplier, accounting for 81% of passenger tire imports with approximately 21.8 million units. In response to these trends, Anip is advocating for protective measures, including increasing import tariffs on passenger tires from 25% to 35%, establishing reference prices for imported goods, and increasing environmental inspections.
