Brazil to establish first Federal Indigenous University

Brazil is set to create its first Federal Indigenous University, known as Uninind. The institution will be headquartered in Brasilia, with various campuses distributed across different regions of the country to reach diverse indigenous communities.

The university aims to bridge scientific and academic training with the ancestral knowledge of indigenous peoples. This approach seeks to expand access to higher education while allowing communities to maintain their languages, traditions, and cultural identities.

The first ten academic programs are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. These initial courses will focus on strategic areas including teacher training, indigenous public health, and territorial and environmental management. The goal is to prepare professionals who can work within their own communities to address specific local needs, such as integrating traditional medicine with scientific practices and combining ancestral biodiversity knowledge with modern conservation tools.
