Brazil to gradually expand paternity leave through 2029

New legislation in Brazil is set to gradually expand paternity leave benefits for workers. Under current regulations applicable through December 31, 2026, employees—including domestic workers—are entitled to 5 consecutive days of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

According to Law No. 15.371/2026, the leave period will increase incrementally starting in 2027. The new schedule mandates 10 days of leave in 2027, 15 days in 2028, and a final duration of 20 days beginning in 2029, subject to specific fiscal conditions outlined in the law. This transition aims to provide fathers with more time to participate in early childcare and strengthen family bonds.
