Brazil to implement new inauguration dates for executives in 2027
Starting in January 2027, the inauguration dates for Brazil's President and state governors will change. Under Constitutional Amendment 111/2021, the President and Vice-President will be sworn in on January 5, while governors and vice-governors will take office on January 6.
This marks a departure from the tradition established by the 1988 Constitution, which set these ceremonies for January 1. The shift aims to resolve scheduling conflicts caused by the New Year's holiday, which previously hindered the participation of international delegations and officials. Additionally, separating the dates allows governors to attend the presidential inauguration in Brasília.
Other elective offices remain unaffected by this change. Mayors and vice-mayors will continue to assume office on January 1, while federal and state deputies, as well as senators, will begin their terms on February 1.
