Brazil Senate Approves Federal Sports University, Awaiting Presidential Sanction

The Brazilian Senate approved the Project of Law 6.133/2025 on 16 April, creating the Universidade Federal do Esporte (UFEsporte). The new federal university will be linked to the Ministry of Education, with its headquarters in Brasília and the possibility of campuses in all regions. Its mission is to provide undergraduate, graduate and technological courses that train managers, coaches, referees, researchers and other sport‑related professionals, while also fostering scientific research, innovation and inclusion in sport.

Minister of Sports Paulo Henrique Cordeiro said the university could begin operating at the start of 2027 if the necessary regulatory steps are completed quickly, stating, “A gente busca colocar a universidade de pé o mais breve possível.” He added, “O importante é que ela [a UFEsporte] está criada.” The proposal also earmarks resources from the federal budget and other sources, and emphasizes support for para‑sport, gender equality and racial equity. The law now awaits presidential sanction before implementation can proceed.
