Brazil to launch tender for Piancó Branch water project
The Brazilian government is set to publish the tender for the construction of the Piancó Branch (Ramal Piancó) in the Sertão region of Paraíba this coming Monday. The project, coordinated by the National Secretariat for Water Security, aims to transport water from the North Axis of the São Francisco River Transposition project to the Piancó River basin.
With an estimated investment of R$ 400 million, the initiative is part of the New Growth Acceleration Program (Novo PAC). The system is designed to span 20 kilometers, capturing water from the Catingueira Aqueduct in Mauriti, Ceará, and delivering it to the Condado Reservoir and the Piancó River in Conceição, Paraíba.
The project has received its preliminary environmental license from Ibama, confirming its environmental viability. Once completed, the infrastructure is expected to provide water security for approximately 350,000 inhabitants across 36 municipalities in Paraíba, while also supporting agricultural needs and animal hydration in the Alto Piancó basin.
