Brazil to add three lung cancer drugs to SUS in October
The Brazilian Ministry of Health will introduce three high-technology medications for lung cancer treatment into the Unified Health System (SUS) starting in October. The new drugs include brigatinib, gefitinib, and durvalumab, which are expected to benefit approximately 1,900 patients.
Brigatinib and gefitinib are oral targeted therapies that act on specific cancer cell alterations and can be administered at home, potentially reducing adverse effects compared to conventional chemotherapy. Durvalumab is an immunotherapy indicated for stage 3 lung cancer patients who are ineligible for surgery, offering improvements in overall survival.
These treatments will be fully funded by the federal government through the newly established Oncology Pharmaceutical Assistance (AF-Onco) program. This initiative aims to expand the availability of high-cost oncology treatments in the public network by 35%, offering 23 different medications. The program is estimated to reach over 100,000 people with an annual budget of R$ 2.1 billion.
