Brazil authorizes return of historic El Cristiano cannon to Paraguay

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has authorized the potential return of the “El Cristiano” cannon to Paraguay. The 12-ton artillery piece, which was cast from church bells during the Triple Alliance War, was captured by Brazilian troops in 1868 and has been held as a war trophy in the National Historical Museum in Rio de Janeiro.

The decision has sparked significant political and legal debate. In Brazil, Federal Deputy Luiz Philippe de Orleans e Bragança has petitioned the Prosecutor General's Office to investigate the legality of the transfer, arguing that Brazilian law prohibits the permanent removal of protected cultural heritage items.

In Paraguay, the move is viewed as a major symbolic victory for national identity and historical reconciliation. Paraguayan Vice President Pedro Alliana expressed confidence in the process, noting that while recent diplomatic tensions existed between the two nations, the return of such artifacts would be a significant gesture of friendship. The restitution process will now require administrative, technical, and diplomatic coordination between the two governments.
