Brazil to return historic El Cristiano cannon to Paraguay

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has authorized the return of the historic “El Cristiano” cannon to Paraguay, a move intended to resolve long-standing diplomatic tensions. The 12-ton artillery piece, which was cast from the bronze of Paraguayan church bells during the Triple Alliance War (1864–1870), has been held in the National Historical Museum in Rio de Janeiro for decades.

The decision follows friction caused by previous remarks made by Lula regarding the origins of the conflict. The restitution is viewed as a significant diplomatic gesture to address historical grievances and shared memory between the two nations. Formal negotiations and legal protocols are expected to follow to finalize the transfer.

In separate strategic developments, President Lula also visited the Aramar Nuclear Industrial Center in São Paulo to support Brazil's naval nuclear propulsion program. He emphasized the importance of technological sovereignty and defense investments, noting that strengthening domestic industry is essential for national autonomy and economic development.
