Brazil tobacco exports surge in August amid successful Chinese inspections

Brazilian tobacco exports saw a significant recovery in August, with unmanufactured tobacco and waste shipments reaching US$ 274.3 million. This represents a 47.4% increase compared to the US$ 186.1 million recorded in August of the previous year. The export volume also rose by 38.2%, climbing from 33.8 million to 46.8 million kilograms, marking one of the strongest August performances in the last decade.

In a related development for the sector, pre-inspections for the 2025/26 harvest have been completed in Santa Cruz do Sul to meet Chinese import requirements. Laboratory tests conducted by the University of Santa Cruz do Sul on samples collected by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock found no quarantine pests among 52 lots from seven companies. This successful inspection complies with bilateral protocols with the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC), clearing the way for continued shipments to China, which was Brazil's second-largest tobacco destination in 2025.
