Brazil: Tobacco prevention initiatives proposed in Espírito Santo and active in Duque de Caxias

In Espírito Santo, a legislative proposal is under discussion to establish a State Policy for Tobacco Prevention and Health Promotion. Proposed by State Deputy Zé Preto, the project aims to implement educational and awareness actions within the state public school system, health units, and Social Assistance Reference Centers (CRAS). The initiative specifically targets the reduction of smoking and the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems, such as vapes, among children and adolescents.

The proposal suggests integrating education, health, and social assistance services, utilizing multidisciplinary teams including psychologists and social workers. Implementation would be gradual and subject to budget availability, without creating new administrative structures.

Separately, in Duque de Caxias, the Municipal Health Secretariat is operating a Tobacco Control Program through various local health units. The program provides services for individuals seeking to quit using tobacco and nicotine products, offering prevention, health promotion, and addiction treatment through several CAPS, UPH, and Family Clinics.
