Brazil toll policies spark debate in Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo

In Rio Grande do Sul, the Federation of Industries of Rio Grande do Sul (FIERGS) has made expanding the number of electronic free‑flow toll gantries in the Vale do Caí a priority for 2026. The proposal, backed by regional business, labor and public leaders, aims to fragment toll charges so drivers pay proportionally to the distance traveled. However, after the sandbox experimental phase ended in December 2025, the concessionaire Caminhos da Serra Gaúcha (CSG) reported that the state has not set a timetable or studies for adding new gantries, and the state government says no plan is currently in place.

Separately, the toll on the Jaguariúna‑Campinas corridor in São Paulo has recently been adjusted. The fee, set by the concessionaire, funds road maintenance and improvements, but drivers and local businesses argue about its fairness and impact on transportation costs, logistics, and tourism in the region.
