Brazil traffic laws: When low beam headlights are mandatory
Under current Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) regulations, the requirement to use low beam headlights during the day depends on specific road types and weather conditions. Drivers must use low beams when passing through tunnels or driving in rain, fog, or mist, regardless of the vehicle's features.
On single-lane highways located outside urban areas, vehicles without Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are required to keep their low beams on. On dual-lane highways or within urban areas, the type of road alone does not mandate daytime low beam use. At night, low beams must remain on whenever a vehicle is in motion, regardless of the road type.
These rules reflect changes from previous legislation. Between 2016 and 2021, Law No. 13.290/2016 required low beams on all highways during the day. However, Law No. 14.071/2020 restricted these requirements starting April 12, 2021. Failure to comply with mandatory headlight usage constitutes a medium infraction, carrying a fine of R$ 130.16.
