Brazil transport sector addresses funding and regulation
Discussions regarding the sustainability of urban public transport in Brazil highlight the need for improved financing models following the approval of the Urban Collective Public Transport Legal Framework. Experts suggest that to maintain affordable fares and high service quality, the sector must expand funding for both infrastructure and daily operations. Proposed solutions include modernizing the 'Vale-Transporte' system, creating a 'Social Vale-Transporte' linked to the Bolsa Família program, and establishing specific budget sources to cover free transit costs.
Separately, the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) has opened a public consultation period for its 2027/2028 Regulatory Agenda. Stakeholders have until September 25 to submit contributions via the ParticipANTT system. The agenda aims to prioritize regulatory actions across five thematic axes: general regulatory projects, federal highway infrastructure, passenger road transport, rail transport for freight and passengers, and multimodal road and freight transport.
