Brazil university enrollment hits record high amid dropout challenges

Brazil has reached a record 10.23 million university enrollments, with private institutions accounting for 79.8% of students. However, high dropout rates remain a significant challenge. Approximately 24.8% of students in in-person programs and 41.6% of those in distance learning (EAD) abandon their studies before graduation.

To combat attrition and maximize infrastructure, several private educational groups are implementing flexible enrollment models. Companies such as Ânima Educação and Cogna allow students to join courses at various times throughout the year using simplified selection processes, such as online exams or letter-based applications. These flexible entry points are common in distance learning but are increasingly being applied to hybrid and in-person formats, though they are generally not applied to medical courses.

While these strategies aim to reduce barriers to access and minimize empty seats, experts emphasize that the primary challenge for the Brazilian education system is shifting focus from merely increasing enrollment to ensuring student retention and successful completion of degrees.
