Contran extends validity of Brazilian driver's licenses until December 2026

The National Traffic Council (Contran) has issued an exceptional extension for the validity of the National Driver's License (CNH) and the Moped Driving Authorization (ACC). Drivers whose documents expired or are set to expire between June 5 and December 8, 2026, will have their documents automatically considered valid until December 9, 2026.

This measure, established through Deliberation No. 279, is automatic and requires no bureaucratic procedures or the issuance of new physical or digital documents. The extension must be respected by all traffic enforcement agencies within the National Traffic System (SNT) across Brazil. However, the extension does not apply to drivers with suspended or revoked licenses.

Following the December 9 deadline, drivers still maintain the traditional 30-day grace period provided by the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB) to complete their renewals without penalty. Additionally, state traffic departments (Detrans) have 30 days to update the National Driver's License Registry (Renach) regarding the credentials of medical and psychological examiners to ensure organized processing for those seeking renewal.
