Brazil updates documentation rules for INSS and CadÚnico social benefits

The Federal Institute of Social Security (INSS) has modernized its verification system, using real‑time data cross‑checks and an automatic proof‑of‑life process. To avoid payment suspensions, retirees and pensioners are advised to keep five key records up to date: contact information in Meu INSS, the National Identity Card (CIN), a regular CPF, a Gov.br account with “Ouro” level verification, and biometric data at the paying bank.

For 2026 the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico) – the main portal for families to access Brazil’s social programs – will tighten its entry criteria. Eligibility requires a per‑capita monthly income of up to half a minimum wage (R$ 810.50) and a total family income of no more than three minimum wages (R$ 4 863.00). A family head aged 16 or older, preferably a woman, must register with a photo ID, CPF and supporting documents for all household members. CadÚnico links families to programs such as Bolsa Família, the Social Electricity Tariff, the Continuous Provision Benefit (BPC) and fee exemptions for public exams.
