Brazil urges CadÚnico updates to retain energy discounts and maximize Bolsa Família aid

Equatorial Maranhão warned that more than 325,000 families in the state must update their information in the Cadastro Único (CadÚnico) to continue receiving the Tarifa Social de Energia Elétrica, a discount on electricity bills for low‑income households. Failure to keep the registration current could result in loss of the benefit. The utility also noted that over 400,000 additional families in Maranhão are eligible for the tariff discount but are not yet enrolled.

Nationally, the government explained that families registered in CadÚnico can receive a combination of social programs—including Bolsa Família, the First Childhood Benefit, variable family benefits, and others—that may total up to R$1,000 per month. Eligibility depends on income, family composition, and registration data, making the upkeep of CadÚnico essential for accessing these aids.
