Brazil vehicle licensing requirements and 2026 deadlines
Vehicle owners in Brazil must fulfill several legal obligations to obtain the Certificate of Registration and Licensing of Vehicles (CRLV). The issuance of this mandatory document requires the settlement of various debts, including the Motor Vehicle Property Tax (IPVA), traffic fines, and specific licensing fees. Because IPVA is a state-level tax, payment terms and amounts vary by state.
For the 2026 licensing cycle, deadlines are organized by the final digit of the vehicle's license plate. While owners of vehicles with plates ending in 1 through 7 have already passed their deadlines, those with plates ending in 8, 9, and 0 are still within the period. Specifically, plates ending in 8 are due by October 30, 9 by November 13, and 0 by November 27.
Failure to carry the CRLV can result in severe penalties, including heavy fines, points on the driver's license, and vehicle impoundment. The document can be presented in either physical or digital formats through official channels such as the Detran-PR website or mobile applications.
