Brazil vehicle market shifts toward SUVs and small hatches

The Brazilian light vehicle market is seeing a significant shift in consumer preference toward SUVs and small hatches. Data from January to August 2026 shows these two categories accounted for 67.3% of all new vehicle registrations, a substantial increase from 39.7% recorded a decade earlier.

SUVs have become the primary driver of this concentration. In the first eight months of 2016, SUVs held a 15% market share; by 2026, they reached 46.6%, representing approximately 879,000 units. Meanwhile, small hatches maintained a relatively stable share, moving from 21.7% in 2016 to 20.8% in 2026.

This trend has led to the decline or disappearance of other segments, such as medium hatches, monovolumes, and small sedans. In response to the growing demand, Jeep has introduced the Avenger to its Brazilian lineup. Produced in Porto Real, Rio de Janeiro, the Avenger utilizes a new electrified platform and features advanced driver assistance systems, connectivity options, and 360-degree camera technology.
